چکیده

Measurements of the most probable time-averaged axial ion velocities and plasma potential within the acceleration channel and in the plume of a straightchanneled cylindrical cusped field thruster operating on xenon are presented. Ion velocities for the thruster are derived from laser-induced fluorescence measurements of the 5d[4]7/2 −6p[3]5/2 xenon ion excited state transition centered at λ = 834.72 nm. Plasma potential measurements are made using a floating emissive probe with a thoriated-tungsten filament. The thruster is operated in a power matched condition with 300 V applied anode potential for comparison to previous krypton plasma potential measurements, and a low power condition with 150 V applied anode potential. Correlations are seen between the plasma potential drop outside of the thruster and kinetic energy contours of ions with increasing velocity.

Optical Boron Nitride Insulator Erosion Characterization of a 200 W Xenon Hall Thruster

Vacuum ultraviolet emission (137.9 nm) of boron neutrals sputtered from a 200 W xenon Hall thruster boron nitride insulator is evaluated as a diagnostic for real time evaluation of thruster insulator erosion. Three Hall thruster plasma control variables are examined; ion energy (discharge potential), ion flux (propellant flow), and plasma conductivity (magnetic field strength). The boron emissi...

High Fidelity Multi-Objective Design Optimization of a Downscaled Cusped Field Thruster

The Cusped Field Thruster (CFT) concept has demonstrated significantly improved performance over the Hall Effect Thruster and the Gridded Ion Thruster; however, little is understood about the complexities of the interactions and interdependencies of the geometrical, magnetic and ion beam properties of the thruster. This study applies an advanced design methodology combining a modified power dis...

Time-Synchronized Continuous Wave Laser Induced Fluorescence Velocity Measurements of a 600 Watt Hall Thruster

A time-synchronized continuous wave laser induced fluorescence diagnostic technique based on a sample hold scheme is applied to xenon ion velocimetry of a BHT-600 Hall thruster plume. This method is capable of correlating measured fluorescence excitation lineshapes with current fluctuations in a plasma discharge and is tolerant of natural drifting in the current oscillation frequency. This pape...

Time-evolution of the ion velocity distribution function in the discharge of a Hall effect thruster

The temporal characteristics of the Xe ion axial Velocity Distribution Function (VDF) were recorded in the course of low-frequency discharge current oscillations (∼ 14kHz) of the 5 kW-class PPSrX000 Hall thruster. The evolution in time of the ion axial velocity component is monitored by means of a laser induced fluorescence diagnostic tool with a time resolution of 100ns. As the number of fluor...
